Scott's nose
Since our anniversary is this month, I thought maybe I'd go with a "how we ended up together for the last 16 years" theme for some of January's posts. I won't be able to tell the story all at once, as it's a fairly long story.
Scott's eye
But I actually met Scott at the beginning of the school year in 1982 when I was a sophomore and he was a senior. It was years later that I realized we had met at the "Back to School Dance." He had gone to the dance with a girl that was in my grade. I didn't know he was in high school. He just seemed older, so I thought he had already graduated. Anyway, I met him again a couple of weeks later in art class when I got transferred into the Fine Arts class. I was originally scheduled to be in the beginner class, but the teacher thought I drew well enough to be in the more advanced class. Scott had also been put into that class without taking the prerequisite art class.
Scott's ear
The first or second day of the class we were drawing a pair of our old shoes. Scott was drawing a pair of old boots and I went up to him and complimented him on his drawing. I don't know why -- I was pretty shy (at least back then). I just felt a magnetic attraction toward him. It wasn't long before he ended up sitting right behind me. It was a very relaxed classroom, so we had plenty of opportunities to talk. I remember we had this one assignment to draw the person sitting next to us, which meant we were paired up to draw each other. We had to do a sketch of the person's different facial features and hand. I think that was probably when we started to have feelings for each other. I mean to spend a few hours staring at another person is to get pretty well-aquainted with them. We became friends, and would talk to each other a lot.

So the face parts are of Scott. I found the drawing recently in my mom's attic. I only got an 88% on the project, but I think I found an A+ guy.

Next time I'll talk about our first date and post some pics. :)

Don't I just look great as a Picasso? I found this first on Wil Wheaton, but MEG inspired me to put it on my page with a cool border and shadow added.

P.S. This topic is near and dear to my heart because I was one of a few conservative students who was harrassed at school by a liberal teacher. She called Ronald Reagan and conservative students fascists and Nazis, and I had to endure this almost daily.

I thought I would put in Scott's letter to Rancho Cotate High School Principal Mitchell Carter. This is regarding Tim Bueler, a student at the school who started a conservative club. He is apparently being harrassed and threatened by students and teachers at the school. The letter is an action alert from Conservative Alerts, with Scott's words written in italics.

Scott would make an excellent political blogger BTW, but he isn't interested in taking the time -- yet. ;)

A student in your school, Tim Bueler, has come under verbal assault by faculty members, and threats of physical assault from students, by publishing conservative views in his student group's newsletter that are held by many, if not most, Americans across the nation.

Thank heavens there are more of us loyal, God-fearing, American patriots than there are of you humanistic, hate-my-country-first liberals. You ought to be ashamed of yourselves. You have brought your school under national scorn and condemnation by practically denying a students and many of his like-minded fellows first amendment rights to free speech. But what's worse, you have also denied them protection for expressing the same.

I cannot begin to express the contempt I feel toward your institution. You have demonstrated rank hypocrisy by denying a constitutional right to someone which you hold in reserve for yourself.

Mr. Bueler didn't speak out against Hispanics. He didn't write an article denouncing foreigners. What he did was bring light to a real problem in California (and the U.S.): ILLEGAL immigration.

Because of his stand for the laws of this nation, he has been called a Nazi and a bigot by teachers. Mark Alton - a TEACHER at your school - even encouraged students to "take a stand against the neoconservative wing-nuts who call themselves Americans." Check me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe Mr. Alton has been threatened for his invective against conservatives. What a wonderful country we have where Mr. Alton and Mr. Bueler can speak out about their views without fear of imprisonment or personal harm. Oh, wait, that doesn't apply to Mr. Bueler; he's a "neoconservative wing-nut" who does not deserve to be protected in his person.

It's the responsibility of teachers in a public school to behave objectively within the context of their profession, and to make sure their students have a safe place in which to learn and develop their minds. Please, tell the teachers at your school to stop harassing Tim Bueler for his conservative beliefs, and to protect his right to express those beliefs - including the protection of his physical person. Thank you.

I found Shakespeare's Works on Yahoo this morning which is searchable -- looking for a quote about a hot January. It doesn't work out well as a quote, but I can use the idea for a nice blog title. It's from Much Ado About Nothing:

Leonato: You will never run mad, niece.
Beatrice: No, not till a hot January.

I'm bored. Don't tell my kids, because they will tell me what I tell them -- if you're bored, you must be boring. I'm going to get over it. I think it may be that I haven't been taking my meds consistently. I'm going to get more tomorrow.

Cassandra and Scott went down to Texas to get her stuff today, and Mark started his first day of work at Dollar General. Unfortunately, today is the only day he is scheduled to work until next Thursday. This isn't going to help them save money so they can get their own place.

It's hot. Why is it hot in January? If I weren't so lazy, I would check the weather. OK, I'll check it. It's not very hot, but the humidity is at 90%. Ugh.

And I don't know why I keep getting a little error at the bottom of my page. I'm going to have to try to fix that.

Hey, that sounds kinda catchy...

Last night everybody went to the New Year's Eve Party at the church except for Jason and I. I didn't want to go, as my computer is here, LOL. Jason had wanted to go, but he works for Scrooge and had to go in an hour early yesterday, work 8 hours, stay late and take inventory, and then get up and go to work again this morning. So he didn't really want to go to a party until all hours.

But seriously, the only exciting thing there would be food, and I don't need any more encouragement. So I worked on my blog redesign last night. And I was completely oblivious at midnight, and didn't notice until it was about 10 minutes after the hour. Jason was in his room playing on his computer, and I yelled "Happy New Year" to him, and he yelled back. We laughed, because we're so oblivious when we get busy on the computer. He's not much of a blogger, but is into role-playing games -- writing and playing them. Whatever. ;)

The most exciting thing that happened this early New Year's morning was that Christopher brought me home some balloons from the party. I set them up on top of the printer. A little while later, one of them exploded, which made me scream while simultaneously jumping about a foot out of my chair. EVERYONE in the house heard me freak out. ;)

So here is what I've been dragging together today -- maybe I just want to provide some justification for my online existence:

Blog started: September 8, 2003
Major good events of 2003:
  • Started taking Lexapro

  • Jason officially graduated

  • Cassandra came back

  • Started my blog
  • :)
  • Jason turned 18

  • Ian decided to be homeschooled again

  • Cassandra got married

  • Bought my parents' van

  • Made it through 2003

I made this sweater for Piglet, and as you can tell, she's a real superhero now. I found the pattern here, but I had to modify it a little, as she is really small. I didn't have fabric stars and I'm too cheap to buy them, so I just made some from this pattern -- also modified to make the stars smaller. I don't have a picture of her in her old sweater, but we are so used to seeing her wear one, that when I wash it she looks so nekkid. Now I have 2 sweaters for her, so she won't have to be nekkid again until it's hot outside. I can say one positive thing about having a wiener dog -- they look really cute in sweaters.

This made me so happy! :) I found that The Homeschooling Revolution linked to me today. Here is what they said:

"Take one homeschooling mom add sugar-n-spice opinions and it equals the two-flower blog."

And on the subject of homeschooling, which I haven't even mentioned in awhile, we're taking a little break right now. We have some pretty low standards, and usually fail to live up to them fairly consistently.

But I had a new idea I've been mulling over for a month or so, and that is to make a new weblog with all the links, etc. that I want Charity to use. Ian and Christopher don't have their own internet access yet, but I could definitely make an edublog (if it wasn't a word, it is now, LOL) for Charity to use. She likes the idea, so that really needs to be my next priority.

    TIME
    CRYBABY OF THE YEAR
Most pitiful creature in Middle Earth

    Arwen
    Puhlease --- cheer up already!

Or did you get tired of the pouting and crying over the last two Lord of the Rings movies? I liked Arwen in Fellowship of the Ring, but I got tired of her in The Two Towers and she continued to cry and pout through most of Return of the King. Not having read all of The Lord of the Rings, I didn't know Arwen was really going to stick around and pout and cry in Return of the King. I assumed she had already gone to the Gray Havens. I was actually a little disappointed. :P Oh well, at least she managed to cheer up a little at the end.

Did you also notice that her tailor and/or seamstress must have left for the Gray Havens right after The Fellowship of the Ring, because in the last 2 movies her dress bodices were hanging off her?

I thought I would take a break from my busy schedule of reading blogs, taking online quizzes, and posting dumb pictures, and actually write something serious. I've been thinking about war a lot, especially this year. And my opinion has evolved to this: War stinks, but sometimes you have to fight. Sometimes you can't negotiate. You can never negotiate effectively with bad guys. Yes, there are bad guys. Bad guys don't just want to get along and hug and be your friend. They want to step on your face. They want to hurt you and scare you and take away your stuff. They want to make you do what they want you to, and they want to murder you. You waste your breath pandering to terrorists and dictators.

In the post 9-11 world, we need to fight terrorists and dictators. We don't need to worry about the U.N., France or Germany. We need to protect our own interests, as we sure as heck can't count on anyone else to. I sleep better at night knowing that we are strong on national defense and fighting terrorism. I don't care what other countries think. Where would most of the free world be without the U.S.?

War, what is it good for? War is good for keeping us free from terrorists and dictators. That is my opinion.

    found @ Chew's Place
Your birthday star is in the constellation Perseus. It has the name θ (Theta) Persei in Johann Bayer's Uranometria star catalog. It is also called 13 Persei in the Historia Cœlestis Britannica of John Flamsteed and Edmund Halley. It is called NS 0244+4913 A in the NStars database.

It has visual magnitude 4.1 meaning that you could see this star with the naked eye in good viewing conditions. It is marked in the center of this star chart, at celestial coordinates (J2000 equinox):

    Right ascension 2:44:12
    Declination 49:13:42.4

This star is 36.7 light years away, which means that the light we see from it today set off on its journey at about the same time that you were born. Come back in a month or two and your birthday star may change, as the light from more distant stars reaches Earth.

I feel like the old woman who lived in a shoe today. And I'm feeling depressed. I'm sure part of it is that I've been cutting back on my Lexapro a little so I can make it to payday -- probably not the best idea, but at over $2 a pill, I don't see another option. And I think I have Post Traumatic Holiday Syndrome. Plus, it's Monday, and my kids are fighting like cats and dogs. Mark and Cassandra are coming back to live here (as in -- in this house) tomorrow. ~~sigh~~ Oh yeah, and I'm making dinner for the missionaries tonight. Scott forgot to tell me until last night.

Anyway, I'm sure if anyone comes here, it isn't to get themselves depressed. My New Year's resolution is going to be to think positively. Although technically, I do have until Thursday before I have to start. Maybe I just need some blog therapy. Or crochet-dog-sweater therapy. Is there no one blogging or reading blogs today? What's up with that? Is everyone at work or something? Get a life, people.

Oh, and did I mention that I think George W. Bush is a Great President, not a Miserable Failure?

Are coming to live at Longbourne. Cassandra's story could be the "modern-day made for TV adaptation." Scott and I always think of Cassandra when we watch Pride and Prejudice.

Cassandra is the reason I started blogging. (I needed to do something to keep from going crazy, LOL) So it seems only right to commemorate this moment in a blog. Lydia and Wickham -- I mean Cassandra and Mark, are coming to live with us tomorrow. And we agreed it's for the best until they can get a place of their own -- hopefully in a few weeks. But Cassandra's personality is so -- Lydia. OK, she is more intelligent and more useful than Lydia, but other than that, it's right on.

I just love PSP -- the possibilities are endless...

Feast your eyes upon this photo. Isn't it just a visual feast? Don't you just sense the hunger in that poor womans' eyes? She was raised in Idaho by sheep ranchers, and was forced to eat meat growing up. That woman is my own sweet mother back in June 1970. My dad was in the Navy at the time, and they had some friends over for dinner. The chicken was taking forever to get done, and I guess this photo was a joke. I thought it would look even better if I did colorization on it to make the chicken really stand out. This is my favorite picture of my mom, which is silly, but then she is silly. Of course, I don't take after her at all, as I'm always completely serious about everything. Right.

Coping is why I'm blogging my fingers off today. This is how I'm coping. See, Mark and Cassandra left for Texas (where they live(d) next to Mark's mom & stepdad) Friday night by way of southern Arkansas (where his folks are from). And the car we gave them broke down -- nothing serious, but they have practically no money to fix it. And what they do have they keep having to use to help out his relatives. Which is pretty pathetic, IMO. Anyway, it looks like they are going to have to come back and live with us for awhile, because they don't want to go back to Texas where Mark's mom and stepdad take advantage of them and drive them crazy, or in southern Arkansas, where his siblings take advantage of them. I'm sure a lot of it is mutual mooching, but nevertheless, they aren't ever going to get established unless they can get away from all that. So they're going to come stay with us for awhile. And in theory it's the best plan, but it's not going to be easy or fun. But hopefully that will allow Mark to get a job up here so they can save a little money and get an apartment in the area. ~~sigh~~

Since I didn't get any new mad libs books this Christmas, I thought I would find some free ones online. I did a Google Search and found lots. This one Jason and I did was fun, and I found it here:

    To be, or not to emaciate, -- that is the doorknob;
Whether 'tis nobler in the toenail clipper to suffer
The slings and jumbo jets of squeamish fortune,
Or to take lizards against a sea of barbeque grills,
And by knitting end them. To die, -- to read, --
No more; and by a read to say we end
The sword and the 47,000 natural shocks
That flesh is candlestick-maker to,-- 'tis a ribbon
swimmingly to be wish'd. To die, --- to read,--
    To read! perchance to aggravate! ay, there's the scotch tape;
For in that read of death what droppings may come
When we have mooed off this crummy coil,
    Must give us bookcase....

Oooo... Tolkien Mab Libs! I'm going to go play some more!

Update: Here is the Tolkien mad lib -- not quite as funny, but still kind of fun:

But suddenly the Mirror went altogether dark, as dark as if a shoelace had opened in the world of sight, and Frodo looked into emptiness. In the black abyss there appeared a single Twix that slowly earned until it filled nearly all the Mirror. So dead was it that Frodo stood rooted, unable to cry out or to withdraw his gaze. The Twix was rimmed with cone, but was itself glazed, loose as a cat's, watchful and intent, and the black slit of its pumpkin pie opened on a pit, a window into nothing.

Then the Twix began to snow, searching this way and that; and Frodo knew with certainty and horror that among the many things that it fiddled he himself was one. But he also knew that it could not see him-not yet, not unless he willed it. The doctor that hung upon its chain about his neck grew heavy, heavier than a great air conditioner, and his head was dragged downwards. The Mirror seemed to be growing stink and curls of chicken were rising from the water. He was slipping forward.

'Do not touch the water!' said the Lady Galadriel softly. The vision faded, and Frodo found that he was looking at the cool stars twinkling in the wicked basin. He stepped back shaking all over and looked at the Lady.

Scott took down the Christmas tree yesterday. I was ready for it to go because it wasn't looking too good, and it was shedding badly. In our military days, we always used a fake tree. A couple of years ago I threw that one away. We bought a live dwarf spruce at Lowe's last year. It was over $60, and you could plant it in the yard afterward. And it started to die just recently, right when the one year guarantee ran out -- it figures. Scott wants to give it little more time before he cuts it down to see if it will live, but it's an evergreen --- and it isn't.

Anyway, we had planned to buy another tree like it for this Christmas, but since the other one died, it seemed pointless to spend that much. So this year we got a regular chopped down tree. And it was OK a couple of weeks ago when Scott brought it home, and we kept it watered faithfully. Yesterday Scott took it out and burned it. He said it burst into flame and was gone in 15 seconds. I thought it was unusual that he was back so quickly. He looked a little shaken, and said that from now on we're going to have a fake tree. I think he's been converted, LOL. Ian then related that when Charity's friend was over here, she was trying to light the ends of the needles with a lighter. Nice. I'm glad she didn't burn our house down. :o

I thought that this would be a good way to keep up with some new words I'm trying to learn. I hope my ignorance doesn't show too much by admitting these are new words for me. I often hear or read new words, but I have a bad habit of being lazy, so I usually don't look them up. I miss an opportunity to learn. So, I'm going to put them in my blog so I can see them.

I found these in this excellent article about "Return of the King" by Vox Day. He has an incredible vocabulary. Someday, I hope to be able to read one of his articles and know every word in it.

    aegis
    hubris
    apropos
    verisimilitude
But to know that word, you have to know what this means:
    verisimilar

Maybe I should try using them in future sentences. Nah.
