I'm just sitting here, bored. I'm thinking about having a bowl of sugar-saturated cereal, or maybe some baby carrots. I really want the cereal, but I'm doing
Weight Watchers and I'm sure I've used up my points today. It's a new week, and I really need to keep my food journal. Waaaa! O.K., I settled for the baby carrots. I need to write on here every day about how I'm doing with my points. I'm stuck on a plateau lately.

Here is a picture of my little friend:

I decorated it with FlyLady pictures to make it more special. My timer is a life-saver. It keeps me from getting sidetracked -- as often. I set it many times throughout the day to remind me to go do something productive.

I want to try something that I think will help me study my scriptures daily. I have a hard time just doing it. I feel there should be some plan or structure to it, possibly more sophisticated than reading straight through. So I have this idea that if I just close my eyes, open the book, read a little, and share what I read here, then maybe I will feel more motivated. Let's give it a try, shall we?

(Closing eyes) O.K., Topical Guide has a lot of info, but not exactly what I had in mind. Ah, 1 Chronicles 13. I'll get started reading. It's about David moving the ark of God from Kirjathjearim. The two verses I will share are:

9 ΒΆ And when they came unto the threshingfloor of Chidon, Uzza put forth his hand to hold the ark; for the oxen stumbled.

10 And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Uzza, and he smote him, because he put his hand to the ark: and there he died before God.

What I believe about these scriptures is that although God seems harsh to kill Uzza, Uzza knew he wasn't allowed to touch the ark, and he did it anyway. And I could go on and on with this one, but the point I think he made was to be obedient. And don't presume to know more than God, because that would be dumb.

Yeah, I did it! I read my scriptures today.

I don't want to go to bed. If I do, I know I won't sleep. I suppose had too much Coca-Cola and sugar today. I don't know what to write about because there's so many little things. I guess I can just start a list.

[edited to my personal blog]

* I love writing on here, but I worry and obsess too much about what others may think sometimes. I guess it doesn't matter, really. I love to read other blogger's thoughts and experiences, even the trivial things. Actually, I love to read some blogger's thoughts and experiences. Some are really, really bad thoughts. But I find many people are quite interesting. Well, it shouldn't matter because I'm doing this for me, right? Ooops, I shouldn't should on myself like that.... what was the point I was trying to make? Hmm...

O.K., I've bored myself into sleepiness finally. I will write more tomorrow.

what decade does your personality live in?

This was a really great quiz! I found it on The Three R's.

Who would have thought that you could have hours of fun with a soda straw? Well, I wouldn't have thought it, but that's what we did last night for fun. (We're geeks, obviously.) Ian (my only kid who goes to public school) had to make a homemade instrument for a school project. He had tried the box with rubber bands thing, but he wasn't very happy with the sound quality, plus we only had one rubber band. I got on the internet and found something really easy at http://www.iit.edu/~smile/ph9416.html:

1. Take a soda straw and pinch one end flat.
2. Cut off the corners to form two little reeds. The fact that it's cuttable
means you can make it into an oboe.
3. Hold the reeds in your mouth without squeezing them.
4. Now blow hard.
5. Carefully cut small holes along the length of the straw about one inch or so
apart.
6. Blow in the straw while you cover and uncover the holes to play simple
tunes.

Conclusion:

The two reeds opening and closing at high speed first allow air to flow into the
straw and then stop the flow. The vibrating air is what produces the sound.

We used a small nail to punch holes in the straw, and then widened the holes with a pair of scissors. Two or three straws connected together make a really nice bass sound. The higher sounds actually sound a lot like cell phones, LOL. You might have to work with the "reed" part for awhile and experiment until you can play it. Sometimes cutting it a little more can help.

Have you heard that Overstock.com commercial? I heard it one too many times on the radio today, and I went in search of an e-mail address to contact them. Here is the message I sent them:

Your "Big O" Commercial

I will NEVER buy from your store as long as you run that offensive commercial. I'm not sure what kind of customer base you are trying to appeal to, but I'm really turned off.

Here is their response:

Dear (me),

Thank you for contacting Overstock.com and expressing your concerns over our recent marketing campaign. We appreciate your feedback and I have forwarded your e-mail on to our Marketing Department. We certainly understand that it is difficult to appeal to all audiences. Please rest assured that it was not our intention to offend any viewers.

Again, thank you for your comments. We hope you'll visit us soon to see our great deals on brand-name products.

Sincerely,

James D.
www.Overstock.com

It sounds pretty lame to me, "difficult to appeal to all audiences." Why would they think that would appeal to all audiences? I mean, if it were a movie, wouldn't it rate at least a PG-13 or an R? Is no one who works at Overstock.com a parent? Surely there is someone else out there who doesn't enjoy hearing the orgasmic moanings of women hawking household goods and appliances like it was some highly erotic secret. Anyway, if anyone else wants to complain, here is the email address: info@overstock.com

In case you haven't guessed, I'm a Conservative. I won't say that Republican completely defines me, but I will put this up anyway. The quiz was pretty dumb since every question had "weed smoking" as one of the answers, but I was happy with the results. BTW, "weed" wasn't in any of the answers I chose in case you were wondering.

You are a hard core Republican. You would vote for

I have a strong suspicion that Hillary and Al Gore are both going to go for the 2004 presidential nomination. In that case, I'm afraid poor Al Gore won't stand a chance. I don't care for him at all, but he may actually be preferable to Hillary. She has evil eyes. Have you noticed? She's scary.

I know it's been a week or so since he spewed forth his opinions, but I thought I would share my thoughts on Johnny Depp's anti-American sentiments, and lame, spineless apology. Don't get me wrong, he makes a great actor. There are 3 movies of his that I really like. But I do resent his anti-American views. But, I'm sure he's a Genius in France. As a matter of fact, I would like to dedicate a song to Johnny, LOL. I think Weird Al's new song is ironically timely, even though it was written as a tribute to Frank Zappa.

This is my 80's song quiz result. I like 80's songs, and I always liked this one (not one of my favorites, mind you). But the video was weird ---back in the early MTV days. I never did understand what the cows were about, but then I'm not too good at finding hidden meanings. Hmmm...

Unfortunately for me, I'll probably have this song stuck in my head while I'm trying to sleep tonight. Eeek! I hope I don't dream about cows. If I do, what does it mean?

Sweet dreams are made of this
Who am I to disagree?
Travel the world and the seven seas
Everybody's looking for something
Some of them want to use you
Some of them want to get used by you
Some of them want to abuse you
Some of them want to be abused

I just read something funny and very true about cats on a blog by
ManateeSarah:
That's it. Cats. I don't need men. I'll raise cats and they will stave off the soul-crushing loneliness. Cats are better than men. Cats don't see you as what you could or never will be. Cats view everyone with the same distanced apathy. Cats are honest about the fact their love to you is only because you feed them. And cats, at least, eat bugs you don't want in your home.

Thankfully I've got Scott and cats and dogs and KIDS (But that's another post. I'm talking about cats now). Scott loves them as much as I do. We have Gammie and Zuul. (right) White Kitty (No picture. We never came up with a very original name did we) is Cassandra's cat that she took with her last night.

I still haven't needed a nap today. I think I'm having so much fun writing that I'm wide awake. I did practice my calligraphy. I'm a little rusty, but I think it will come back to me quickly. I haven't really done much of it since high school, so I'm surprised.

The quote I wrote was so wonderful that I'm adding it here:

Delbert L. Stapley:
Maintaining good personal habits which are pleasing to our Heavenly
Father will strengthen our character, increase our influence for
good, improve our example, bless our loved ones and friends, enrich
our lives, and enable us to accomplish those things that yield true
personal satisfaction and build peace and happiness in our hearts.
We will have joy eternally, possessing a treasure to be much desired
and sought after, for the Lord gives this assurance: "Inasmuch as
men do good they shall in nowise lose their reward." (D&C 58:28.)
It all starts with a single step --we decide that we can do it.

And on to another subject for awhile... I'm excited about a Yahoo group I found last night called LDSCopywork that Charity can use for copywork every day. So far I'm very impressed with the articles that the group owner has chosen. Since I want to practice calligraphy (I even bought a pen last week), I will probably use this group too.

It's very handy having our home computers networked now so that I can share files with Charity. I have folders set up for her so that I can save web pages, documents, and links for her to use for school. She has been requesting more news articles. I can hardly believe it.

I am so grateful that I have homeschooled my children. Through it, I have learned at least as much as my kids, but I'm sure I learned more. I have a drive to learn now that I never had when I was in school. I have read many classic books and learned to love reading aloud. I even think I'm pretty good at it since Jason is almost 18 and still loves to hear me read Terry Pratchett. My vocabulary has grown immensely. I have also developed a love of the Constitution and a strong interest in politics.

This is something I hope to be able to do soon. I know I have a lot to work out where Cassandra is concerned, but I don't want to be obsessed with worry and frustration. I called her, and she sounded somewhat relieved. She was worried that I had ignored her earlier call. She was at Sonic filling out applications. I wonder how long she will be able to stay in a fast-food job before she quits. Her feet are already bothering her when she's on them for hours. It would have been better if she had stayed here and possibly got a job with Scott.

So far I am doing well today. I didn't get enough sleep, but there is a possibility of a nap later. I got up and got quite a bit done this morning. I'm determined not to let my yesterday determine my today. I got up, showered, and did some cleaning before I got on the computer. FlyLady would be proud. I haven't done that in awhile. I don't think this is because Cassandra is gone, but in spite of it. I'm trying to get control of myself and not get discouraged.

Cassandra called and left a message while I was helping Charity with her computer. I'm sure she thinks I'm not talking to her since I've been screening calls lately. I guess I will call her in a few minutes.

Oh, Charity gave me a riddle this morning, and I was able to guess it. I can't believe it, because I really stink at riddles. Here it is:

This thing all things devours:
Birds, Beast, trees, flowers;
Gnaws iron, Bites steel
Grinds hard stones to meal;
Slay king, ruin town,
and beat high mountains down.

The answer is Time. She got it from The Hobbit.

I made a couple of changes to the look. I now have purple, and a font I like for the title.

I need to go to bed. At least I won't have to be a taxi-driver tomorrow for Cassandra. Is this looking on the bright side?

I think I'll go read some more of Frederic Bastiat's The Law

Well, this is my second attempt. I lost my first post--I think. Hmmm. Well anyway, as I was saying, I feel the need to journal again. This seems like a motivating way to do it. I might actually write more than every six months this way. I think it will be therapeutic to write. I only see Dr. S. every month to six weeks, so maybe this will help me through.

Cassandra left today. She went back to live with her boyfriend. It was an impulsive choice. I have mixed feelings about it. I'm somewhat relieved because she is so high maintenance. I do hurt, though. Every time I adjust to her again, she leaves and it breaks my heart (and Scott's) again. Parental love is so hard. I get mad at her and wish I didn't care sometimes. No matter what she does or how she hurts me, I can never stop loving and caring. Darn.

I wonder if she will take care of herself and eat healthy. She insists at 16 that she is old enough to take care of herself, but I know better. Mark has shown that he is completely irresponsible. When will the rollercoaster ride end? I don't want to be a grandma at 37, but I will be. I just hope that she will be O.K.

The thing I prayed for this morning was that she would learn some important lessons. Well, maybe this is the answer for her.

I'm going to publish this now and see how it works. (fingers crossed)
